Colorado Unit 147 Description
Unit 147 Located in Las Animas County bounded on the North by Las Animas-Otero County line; on the East by Purgatoire River and Chacuaco Creek; on the South by U.S. 160; on the West by San Francisco Creek, Purgatoire River, Colorado Interstate Gas Pipeline Rd., east boundary of U.S. Army Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site.
GMU 147 Elevation: 5,801 feet to 4,429 feet. Terrain: Flat to steep rocky canyons. Vegetation: Shortgrass prairie, pinons, juniper, cottonwood riparian. Weather: Mild with first freeze or snow possible early October. Severe blizzards with high winds and blowing snow possible in winter. Land Status: less than 5 percent public, 95 percent private. Hunter Access: Poor. Mule Deer: Along the Purgatoire River and Chacuaco Creek. Pronghorn: Southern half of unit. Small Game : The basin of the Purgatoire River offers good hunting for turkeys.
