Colorado Unit 144 Description
Unit 144 Located in Baca County bounded on the North by U.S. 160; on the East by U.S. 287; on the South by Oklahoma border; on the West by Baca-Las Animas County line.
GMU 144 Elevation: 4,131 to 4,902 feet. Terrain: Flat to gently rolling. Canyons in southwest part of unit. Vegetation: Shortgrass prairie, wheat fields, rolling sand sage, pinon and juniper canyons. Weather: First freeze or snow possible early October. Possible severe blizzards by December. Land Status: 65 percent private, 35 percent Comanche National Grasslands. Hunter Access: Good for pronghorn, poor for deer. Deer: Canyons along the Oklahoma border. Pronghorn: Throughout the unit with southern half receiving the most hunting pressure. Small Game: Scaled quail and cottontail rabbits found throughout the unit; hunting is good. Pheasants and bobwhites
found in agricultural areas throughout the unit.
