Colorado Unit 63 Description
Unit 63 West Elk Mountains Region: Delta, Gunnison and Montrose Counties bounded on the North by Colorado Hwy 92; on the East by Colorado HWY 92, Delta-Montrose Co.unty line, Smith Fork-Dyer Creek divide, Smith Fork-Curecanti Creek divide, Curecanti Pass and Curecanti Creek; on the South and West by the Gunnison River.
Winter weather is almost guaranteed during any season in this area which includes the high country of the West Elk Wilderness. Altitude ranges from 5,400 feet near Hotchkiss to more than 12,000 feet in the wilderness. The variation in elevations and the topography creates volatile weather at all times of year. Public lands make up around 60% of the acreage in Unit 63. When snow falls, herds move quickly to
lower elevations on the western ends of the unit.
